Tesla is firmly in control of electric car registrations in Germany with the Model Y, setting the benchmarks rivals will have to measure up to. Volkswagen, by contrast, holds its ground in the monthly reports as the strongest volume brand, keeping the Wolfsburg-based group at the top of the BEV business.
Behind them, a number of established manufacturers are pushing forward: Škoda is making headlines again in September with the Elroq, while BMW and Mercedes-Benz are defending their positions among the leading brands with the GLC Elektro. Audi is clearly represented in the current statistics and monthly rankings, and BYD is noticeably expanding its presence in battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars. Kia, Hyundai and Opel keep turning up in model lists and market reports, showing that the race for the lower spots in the top 10 is far from decided.
Overall, the German EV market shows premium manufacturers, volume brands and Asian providers all competing for customers at once. The leaders' lead is large, but competition from the Far East is growing steadily and increasing pressure on the traditional manufacturers.
