In the competition for the Mittelstand, ING is making the most striking move with new business banking offers for small and medium-sized enterprises. While the big banks defend their positions in corporate banking, an institution that puts digital processes for self-employed professionals and SMEs at the forefront is now moving into the spotlight.
Commerzbank is pushing back with its strong presence in Mittelstand banking and is also weighing in on current market debates. DKB is making a comeback with news on business accounts and overnight deposits (Tagesgeld) in the corporate customer segment, while Deutsche Bank reaffirms its claim to be the central point of contact for larger Mittelstand companies. At the same time, neobanks are pushing into the space: Qonto is being searched for intensively via comparison sites and business banking topics, Holvi bundles business accounts, bookkeeping and e-invoicing, Fyrst is courting micro-enterprises, and Penta remains part of the conversation around modern business accounts.
For the traditional institutions, local roots remain their most important trump card. Sparkassen and Volksbanken are still considered familiar reference points in the corporate customer environment, even though they must measure up to digital expectations. Overall, the market is deciding between digital speed and personal closeness to the customer.
