The health insurance crisis shook Mexico's sector and Quálitas found itself at the center of the conversation, with a rebound in its stock market shares that gave it a visible boost. Its prominence coexists with that of GNP Seguros, which appeared among the insurers most cited in the legislative debate on premium increases and claims.
User complaints set much of the agenda. MetLife ranks among the most-complained-about firms in the debate over health insurance, and AXA Seguros remains in the public eye over the tension between premiums and coverage. Further down, HDI, Mapfre, Zurich, BBVA Seguros and Chubb maintain their presence in auto, personal lines, corporate insurance and bank-linked policies. The most striking move came from Prudential, which returned to the spotlight after announcing this week the sale of its Mexican subsidiary.
The sector is under scrutiny: pressure on health premiums and the debate in Congress are forcing major insurers to answer to customers and regulators. Those who can demonstrate transparency in claims and coverage will be best positioned to capitalize on this attention.
