Nu set the pace for digital banking in Mexico after making the leap to becoming a bank and revving up its card business, a move that put it at the center of the financial conversation.
BBVA responded with its digital scale and strong presence in mobile banking, while Mercado Pago kept its wallet and payments ecosystem in view amid the debate over changes to banking apps ahead of Buen Fin. Plata gained ground as a bank and made its way into the most relevant digital players, and Hey Banco added new capabilities to its app. BanCoppel and Banco Azteca kept their focus on financial inclusion and mass consumption, while Santander, Openbank and Banorte maintained their presence with promotions and payment apps.
Competition is no longer fought only in branches, but in the app, on the phone and in everyday payments. Traditional banks still have muscle, but digital banks are the ones setting the pace of the conversation.
