Mercado Pago regained the center of the debate with the discussion over digital payments and the digital economy law, in a week when electronic finance came under scrutiny. Its name once again led the conversation in the Mexican market.
Nu México dominated the agenda with its banking authorization, while Revolut advanced on the regulatory front and generated expectations for its banking offering. Konfío reappeared with its pursuit of a banking license and financing for SMEs, and Finsus drew interest with the move of sofipos seeking to capture more payments and digital credit. Clip reaffirmed its role in merchant payments and acquiring, Plata is scaling with its neobank narrative, and Stori and Klar are competing for digital consumer credit. Spin by OXXO appeared in the battle for the mass user of payments and digital savings.
The week leaves a fundamental question: who keeps the mass customer when the banking license and digital credit become the battleground? Fintechs that already have scale in payments are now looking to become full banks, and competition is shifting from the digital wallet to the balance sheet.
